  • Recharging Before Back-to-School Season: A Mom’s Wellness Guide

There is a particular feeling that arrives in late August. The summer is winding down, the back-to-school ads are everywhere, and somewhere in the background a familiar low hum of anticipation is building. For many mothers, that hum carries some anxiety with it. The busy season is coming. The calendar is about to fill back up. And you are not sure you are ready.

What most moms do in this window is focus almost entirely on their children: the school supplies, the new shoes, the schedules, the transitions. That is completely understandable. But these final weeks of summer are also one of the most valuable opportunities of the year to take care of yourself before the pace accelerates. The question is whether you use that window intentionally or let it slip by.

Why Late Summer Is Worth Paying Attention To

The transition into fall is one of the most demanding stretches of the year for mothers of school-age children. Within a matter of weeks, the household shifts from unstructured summer mode into early alarms, packed lunches, homework, activities, and a schedule that leaves very little margin. If you are already running low going into that transition, the fall can feel like a wave that knocks you over before you find your footing.

Late summer is different. The pace has slowed slightly. The urgency of early summer is behind you. There is often a bit more breathing room in the day, and the structure of fall has not yet arrived to fill it. That in-between space is genuinely precious, and it is worth using some of it on yourself.

    What Recharging Actually Looks Like

Recharging before a busy season is not about squeezing in one big self-care event and calling it done. It is about a series of smaller, intentional choices over several weeks that leave you feeling more like yourself going into fall. Here are some places to start.

    • Take an honest look at how you are feeling right now. Not how you think you should feel at the end of summer, but how you actually feel. Tired, anxious, relieved, lonely, grateful? Starting there matters.
    • Move your body in a way that feels good rather than obligatory. A walk in the evening, a yoga class, some gentle stretching before the day starts. Physical movement is one of the most reliable tools for emotional regulation.
    • Address anything that has been quietly nagging at you. The conversation you have been avoiding, the appointment you have been putting off, the thing you keep meaning to deal with. Going into fall with fewer open loops reduces the mental load considerably.
    • Do at least one thing this summer that was purely for you. Not productive, not for the kids, not for the house. Just something you wanted to do.
    • Consider whether your current support system is enough for the season ahead. Do you have the right people around you? Is therapy something you have been thinking about starting?

Setting a Sustainable Intention for Fall

One of the most useful things you can do in late summer is to decide, before the chaos begins, what you want to protect in the fall. Not a long list of resolutions. Just one or two things that matter to you and that tend to be the first things to go when life gets busy.

For some moms that is exercise. For others it is a weekly moment of quiet, or maintaining a therapy appointment, or protecting Sunday evenings as family time without screens. Whatever it is, identifying it now and building it into the fall schedule before that schedule fills up is far more effective than trying to carve it out after the fact.

If You Are Heading Into Fall Already Depleted

If you read the first paragraph of this post and felt a quiet recognition that you are not okay, that is worth sitting with for a moment. Late summer exhaustion that does not feel like normal tired, anxiety about the fall that goes beyond typical back-to-school nerves, a sense of disconnection from yourself or your family — these are signals that deserve more than a few days of rest.

Therapy is one of the most effective ways to genuinely reset before a demanding season. It gives you a dedicated space to sort through what you are carrying, clarify what you need, and walk into fall with more than just a to-do list checked off.
